Are you considering a new dog? Thinking about rescuing instead of using a breeder? We have your must read companion guide to finding your new furry family member. The latest book by Diane Rose-Solomon, pet parent and certified humane education specialist, in What to Expect when Adopting a Dog, wrote your guide.

It is so important that you take this decision seriously considering questions like: Is a new baby expected? And what breed will fit into our family best? Really understanding the situation, weighing all options will help reduce the risk of needing to find a new home or returning/taking them to a shelter. Diane takes you through each step with 5 easy to use modules.

The modules may be used in any order. Have you already taken in a new furry family member and are struggling to blend them into your family? Start with Module 4: Integrating your dog into your home. Have your kids been asking for a dog? Before you answer, Module 1 is a good resource.

If you’ve spent much time digging through (pun intended) my blog you know I’m not only passionate about dogs but have an extra place in my heart for special needs dogs. Unfortunately dogs’ lives are much shorter than ours. When we take on the responsibility of adding a furry member to our family I feel it should be viewed as their forever home. I look at the relationship as one that should also be viewed as being maintained in times of sickness and health. For the situations when that is truly not possible, Diane covers topics like re-homing as a last resort, also important for both your family and the dog.

In Module 1 Diane reminds us about the benefits of rescuing an adult, senior or special needs dog (pages 9-10). I love that the first section of Module 5 is titled, “Exceptional Dogs” and begins with, “Special needs dogs offer as much love as any other dog, no matter their challenges”. Diane is truly a woman after my own heart. She describes our type as having a soft spot in our hearts for the underdog.

This book really should be part of any dog parent’s library. Pick up your own copy right away.
