Not Like the Others: Harley’s Story

Pets teach us important life lessons. In “Not Like the Others” Harley is a rescued, diabetic dog learning the meaning of a forever family and unconditional love.

How do you talk to your child about their newly diagnosed illness? How do you tell your child their pet has an illness like diabetes? What can you do to explain that they will be loved unconditionally regardless of health issues? The answer is “Harley’s Story”.

Join Harley a rescued, diabetic dog on his adventures. Including photographs, Harley’s story seeks to teach elementary children the value of being different and unconditional love.

Book Reviews

By M.K Clinton: Harley’s Story Not Like the Others is such a heartwarming book. It allows the reader to understand that it is okay to be different does not make you unlovable. Harley was a lucky dog to have such a wonderful family. The author did a great job explaining Harley’s illness as well as other dogs that aren’t like the others. I will read this book to my granddaughters.

By Avery: What a treat! This lovely book was exactly the story my family needed. In these complicated times, Harley’s Story offers some sunshine and hope. Harley is an adorable, rescued Yorkshire terrier who gets adopted and learns that family is forever no matter what. Told from sweet Harley’s perspective, this book is a feel-good story, full of friendship, kindness, and love. Not to mention, the drawings and photographs are super cute and will make any young dog lover smile!
Harley reminds me so much of my rescued Yorkie. If you have ever loved a Yorkie or a dog with special needs, you will enjoy this book

By Crystal Frost: Harley’s story is a touching tale about adoption and choosing to love those that are different and/or have special needs. In one of my first years in education, I had a student that had diabetes and a pump. How wonderful would it have been to be able to read this book to that class!
As an educator, I know the importance of having stories and books that are both windows (build empathy by featuring stories and people different than the reader) and mirrors (those that the reader can see themselves in) so the reader builds their sense of belonging. This would be a great addition to a classroom library!

By C. Ramos: This is a beautiful story of love between Harley and his family who accept him and love him despite his health issues. A great read for families with children who are facing health issues. Great message.

By Speedneden:  This is a great book about being different. It’s perfect for children with newly diagnosed conditions such as diabetes, or for families who have pets with special needs. Very good story and lots of full-color pictures.

By Marilyn Slater: I could feel the love on every page! This book illustrates what a mutually rewarding experience it is to own a pet that might be overlooked by others or to care for a pet who develops medical issues as it ages.
